Jan Rath is Professor of Urban Sociology in the sociology department of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and a researcher at the university’s Centre for Urban Studies (CUS) and Institute for Migration & Ethnic Studies (IMES). He is also Research Fellow at the Migration Research Center (MiReKoc) at Koç University, Istanbul, Fellow at the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Study (NIAS) and Professor by Special Appointment at Erasmus University Rotterdam (see below).

As well as being Chair of Metropolis International, Jan Rath is an associate of the World Economic Forum and a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS). He has, moreover, been an advisor to a wide array of local, national and supranational governmental organisations and civic society institutions, including the European Commission (notably DG Enterprise and Industry), the OECD, the OSCE and the United Nations (notably the IOM, UNHCR, UNCTAD and the Population Division).
